Great Council – Nov 8, 2021

Great Council of Carolingia:

Baron and Baroness Nobildonna Fiore Leonetta Bardi and Lord Frithuric Ulman

Championships for Thrown and Archery have wrapped. They will be announced at an ad hoc court at archery practice in Carlisle.

There was a gathering of the company of Bowman at practice in Carlisle. Thanks to Elian for putting it together.

The Barons have have been traveling to events outside the Barony, and it is good to see other Carolingians out and about, and thank you to the retaining staff.

They will be at 100 minutes war and Bergental Yule.

Sugawara has stepped up as largesse coordinator.

Ideas are being floated for informal gatherings, including SCA and non-SCA events. If you don’t facebook, please e-mail your ideas to the Barons.

Seneschal Lady Aaradyn Ghyoot

Policy Amendment Vote: 32 Voting seats on council. 27 Ballots returned. Thank you to all the officers, guild heads, and so forth. The poll closes at 8, so there is still time, do it now.

Officer Blurb:

I would like all Officers to write up a short blurb about the workings of your office. I’m going to work with the Webminister to have a space where those descriptions are available so that there is a little less mystery in what some of these offices do, which I think will go a long way to helping these positions be filled by new and eager people. The purpose of this is to make sure that during future transitions, interested people have a better idea of what the role entails.

Events

Carolingia 50 Year Lady Patience Faircloth
Monetary number is not yet ready for 50 year which will be in 2023. A site in Waltham is being looked at (Girl Scout camp with cabins and campground), Simona of Quintavia is familiar with the site and is reaching out.

Originally planning was conceived as a weekend event with feast. We are still interested in doing that. Patience would like to shift the event to February in order to avoid conflicts with regularly scheduled events, including our own Otter’s Welcome. Camping may be a problem, but if it is in Waltham, the event is easily day trippable, and can be reached by bus. Patience is not ready to ask for council approval at this point, but will once financial information is available. Attendance may be significant because of post pandemic recovery. Patience will inquire about inside buildings, insulation.

Ysabel?: Weather may make the event site inaccessible for those with mobility issues.
Eagdyth: Carolingia is a large Barony. Travel may be a significant issue especially with winter weather.

Patience: Camp will be less available in the summer months, and the schedule is tight. We are currently looking at pricing for Feb, March, and April. We don’t know if it is certainly available in February.

Seneschal: An estimate of 300 seems reasonable. Thank you for the update.

Patience: If you are interested in being part of planning, please contact P by e-mail. P does have a team, but more people are always needed. More info next month.

Otter’s Welcome* Lady Astrid Eiriksdottir

Greetings Carolingian council! Otter’s welcome’s wheels are turning! We currently have it up on the EK calendar, I plan on updating the listing with any relevant information as needed. I am currently in process of interviewing for a registrar. I aim to have this position filled by the end of the week. I welcome all feedback and suggestions for consideration on how to make this an event to remember for any newcomers that may join in our game. This schedule does not conflict with Mother’s Day.

*This position has officially been declared the Ottercrat. -Donato

Other Events?

Seneschal: Carolingia has a rich history of events, and their excellencies would love to have more. Please make suggestions:

Fortunata:

Carolingian ball. Dance is fun and a good social event.

Saturnalia: Winter festival with food and fun and more options to be social and eat food.

Reading events: The Aeneid or similar.

Coronets: We really want to see events. Simple events, easy events are fine. They don’t have to be big events, small local things are fine. Look for parks, bathroom facilities, free access, cheap access, whatever.

Patience:

More winter/holiday events that don’t conflict with the major attended summer events would be good. This is a great time for small local events.

Caterina

Pre Covid plans to direct a play at Mass Bay Community College. Auditorium is available for rent and ample parking is available. Close to commuter rail, Newton Riverside. This may be picked up for the fall, or early 2023.

Donato

Demos would be a good thing, it might be worth looking into the Topsfield Fair, Waltham Steampunk Festival

Justan:

Might be time to bring back the Autocrats Roundtable in order to help people be willing to step up to autocrat.

Etain:

Is Peter the Red up for running 12th night this year? Not at his house, but may be able to do it elsewhere. Discussion followed, summarized: It may be possible, not at Peter’s&Aryana’s place. Options are being investigated.

Duke Lucan:

I am currently helping Winnikinnie castle in the Canton of the Towers in a professional role. The location suffered heavily during the pandemic, because of an electrical failure resulting in burst pipes, etc. Lucan’s company is doing events for them as part of the salvage plan, and is running the Calendar for them. As such, he could schedule an event for Carolingia. Likewise during his regular “Knight’s Hall” events, Carolingia is welcome to set up a recruitment table.*

*(More discussion and notes following the announcements) – DF

Thorvald:

Boredom War – weekend event that went away. Thorvald is trying to pick a fight to get this restarted. Although it will likely be a Quintavian event.

Seneschal: Is a Renn dance demo planned for Arisia?

Justin: Arisia is still trying to work out details, but we are willing.

Q&A with Duke Lucan regarding Winnikinnie Castle
Lukan:

Site Capacity: 500, 1000, 1500 depending on portapotties. No plumbing available at this time. Lukan’s event has 5 portas total (2 by default)

Parking: Small parking good for 250 cars up top. Parking down at the bottom has additional space.

The Winnikinnie foundation runs the castle and first right to the use of the land, but it’s owned by the city of Haverill.

Sat abandoned until the 70s, Haverill helped rehab it, although that had some negative effects.

Water and elec on site. Caretaker on site.

Permit for beer and wine is simple, a permit for liquor is difficult.

It is not normally campable, but that is an internal policy, and it might be possible to change it for the right events.

Contracts would be with Knights Hall and Winnikinnie foundation. Payments would go to Winnikinnie.

There are no set prices, but we are requested to offer fair market pricing, as Lukan is trying to benefit and help salvage the location.

Patience: Are firepits permitted?

Lucan: Aboveground firepits are okay. Lukan is working to confirm with the city for Canopies and tents over 10×10. For future reference, MA or CA fire retardant is required for tends over that size. Lukan’s permit would apply in this case as long as our tents meet fire code.
