This will cover the basics of what you will need for your first SCA event. Please contact our Chatelaine if you have any questions not answered by this or our website.
- Something to wear. Since we’re all participants, everyone is asked to wear an attempt at pre-seventeenth century clothing. Not sure where to find such a thing? We have an Officer of the Gold Key who has a collection of loaner clothing to help you get started. Want to make or find your own? Have a look at this page to start.
- Something to eat. Most people will bring a picnic lunch for the middle of the day. However, check the event announcement for something called a “dayboard” – that is usually a buffet-style lunch for minimal cost that is available for most of the day. If you’re not sure about what you’ll be able to eat, the event announcement should list the dayboard cook; they’ll be happy to tell you what they’re making and to answer your questions.
In the evening, there is likely to be a feast, which will be a big meal and a great chance to sit and talk to the people you’ve just met. As with the dayboard, look for the contact information for the feast cook in the event announcement; they want to make sure you’re going to have a great meal that you can enjoy!
-
Something to eat on. A plate, bowl, silverware, and napkin, and you’ll be ready for anything. You don’t have to eat with your fingers unless you want to! A goblet or cup to drink from is always a good idea.

Your curiosity! Please ask questions – and don’t be afraid to ask if you can help! Events are the product of many hands, and there’s always something that needs doing.
