There won’t be a normal online Newcomers’ Night this month — I’ll be flying home from Thanksgiving on the usual night.
*But* our Dancemistress will be traveling next week, and has asked me to fill in for her. So we’re going to combine the two, and make next Thursday’s Dance Practice into an *in-person* Newcomers’ Night, for the first time in a long time, and you’re all invited!
As the name says, this is a practice. No SCA garb required — wear normal street clothes that you find comfortable to move around in.
No previous dance experience is needed, and you don’t need to bring a partner: all dances will be taught, and we’ll choose different partners for each dance. Dances will be on the easier side, and will range from sedate to a little bit energetic, but this isn’t going to be heavy aerobic exercise.
To make the evening even better, we’ll be joined by the Waytes of Carolingia, who will provide us with live music for dancing, so it will also be a great opportunity to talk with them about period music if you like!
Dance practice happens at the Presentation Foundation School, at 640 Washington Street in Brighton. That’s on the corner of Washington and Tremont Street, and there’s a free parking lot on the Tremont Street side (40 Tremont Street on your GPS). It’s also T accessible via the 57 and 64 bus routes. Either way, it’s fairly easy to get to. There are a few small eateries nearby, and lots more down Washington Street, if you want to grab something to eat beforehand. (I’ll be having my dinner in the dance room, if anyone wants to show up a little early and join me.)
We’ll be meeting in the Allston-Brighton Room — from the parking lot, there’s a staircase down from the right-hand entrance (if that door is locked, come in the left-hand entrance, and turn right to get to the stairs). Go through the door at the bottom of the stairs, and we’re at the end of the hall. There’s also an elevator down, at the left-hand entrance.
Dancing will start around 7:30pm, and we’ll run until about 9:30, with a break in the middle.
So if you can, I encourage you to come by and join us — it should be a lot of fun, a great chance to meet some folks, and the more’s the merrier!
Sincerely,
Justin
