Otter’s Welcome is a one-day fest celebrating pre-17th century living history as we welcome people new to the SCA to our world.
It is offered in the spirit of Rose Otter, a beloved Carolingian who was the very model of welcome in our society. So bring your curiosity about pre-17th century life and have a fun-filled day in the Barony of Carolingia within the beautiful East Kingdom.
What can you expect to experience at this event? Arts and Sciences including music, dance, and fiber arts. Martial activities including armored combat, fencing, archery, and more. Community in the form of gentles of all ages engaging in their favorite hobbies and demonstrating them for you.
What should you wear? An attempt at pre-17th century clothing is part of all of our events, but don’t worry if you don’t have something – we have you covered. Our Gold Key has an ample selection of loaner garments to help you look, and feel, your best.
Will there be food? Yes! We are offering a boxed lunch for those who reserve in advance, but in Carolingian tradition, do feel free to pack a picnic to enjoy in the main hall or outside on the beautiful grounds of our venue, Veasey Memorial Park. Please note that alcoholic beverages are not permitted at this event.
What does it cost? How do I register?
For those new to the SCA, prices are as follows:
Adults (18+): $15
Adult (18+) w/student ID: $10
Youth (6-17): $5
Child (0-5): Free
Boxed Lunch: $5 (reserved in advance)
All pricing and pre-registration information can be found on the event listing page. The pre-registration deadline is May 12th, but walk-ins (cash or check only) are welcome.
What is the SCA?
“The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international non-profit volunteer educational organization. The SCA is devoted to the research and re-creation of pre-17th century skills, arts, combat, culture, and employing knowledge of world history to enrich the lives of participants through events, demonstrations, and other educational presentations and activities.”
From the East Kingdom’s Chatelaine page:
The SCA welcomes all people who share our interest in the Middle Ages. We have participants of all ages, racial or ethnic backgrounds, religious affiliations, sexual orientation, level of education, and economic backgrounds. We truly embrace the diversity found in our groups and respect all viewpoints. The only thing expected is an interest in the Middle ages, and a willingness to participate and learn.
We share a dream of daring knights and lovely ladies, of castles and of tourneys, and colorful banners flying. Feasting with kings and queens, attending royal courts, and living the ideals of honor and courtesy, this is what we are about. We do this by learning new arts and skills, by teaching these things to others, supporting the efforts of each other, and treating each other with respect.
