Item: Or Nue Heraldic Device
Status: Complete
Description:
Or Nue Heraldic Device, Splendor silk over silver passing thread on linen.
This is an embroidered heraldic device using “Or Nue,” or literally “shaded gold.” It’s a form of goldwork embroidery in which the metal thread (it’s real silver, in this case) is laid back and forth across the top, and then the colors and pattern of the silk threads on the top (that are holding down the silver) make the image appear. Or Nue can appear with lots of different colors of thread, which means you can almost “paint” over the gold or silver threads you’re covering, so the whole work kind of shimmers. In this particular case, because it’s heraldry, it only uses two colors – the blue silk, and then the exposed silver.
This is the device for my teacher, Amalie von Hohensee, created as an elevation gift for her appointment to the Order of the Laurel.

Neat! It does seem like a technique very well-suited to heraldry…
