Baronial Meeting Minutes – December 7, 2015

Please contact the Secretary at secretary@carolingia.eastkingdom.org with any questions or corrections.

1. Officer Announcements

  • Seneschal: Aurelia Rufinia

Following Curia at Yule, the Kingdom of the East is getting Award of Arms level awards!  For full information, please see postings in the upcoming Pikestaff and in the East Kingdom Gazette.

Also discussed at Curia was a shift from the “non-member surcharge” (NMS) to a “member discount” language focus in event announcements.

Following Council Meeting: Contrary to what was said at curia, there will be no change in verbiage of the NMS on event announcements because there are tax implications to membership discounts that could have repercussions for the SCA. If there is a change, it would only come through the Board of Directors.

  • Gold Key: Aaradyn Ghyoot (standing in)

As a monthly reminder, if you have a need for Gold Key at an event, please contact in advance.  The more advance notice you provide, the better (and the less chance of having to pick up garb prior to the event).

  • Chatelaine: Aaradyn Ghyoot

There has been a high amount of traffic on the Barony’s website.  The new Deputy Chatelaine is Juliana Osborne.

  • Order of the Moon: Gundormr Dengin

The next meeting of the Order of the Moon will be after the February council meeting (February 1st).

  • Order of the Perseus: Kazimierz

The next meeting of the Order of the Perseus will be after the March council meeting (March 7th).

  • Thrown Weapons: Eadgyth oet Staeningum (standing in)

The Carlisle Thrown Weapons range will be closed until the spring.

  • Steward: Gudrun Thronvaldsdottir

I toured 8’ x 10’ spaces at the U-Haul off of Route 16 in Medford, since 10’ x 10’ spaces are not very available.  Our current Baronial storage space is for $89/month and is 5’ x 10’.  The 8’ x 10’ space would be $125/month, with a discount of the 13th month free if you pay for the first 12 months.  The space is indoors, heated to 55 degrees, and has parking, a loading dock, elevators, a hallway to stack things in, and has more accessible hours than the current location.

Council approved the use of funds for the new storage space.

2. Guild Announcements

  • Dance: Justin de Coeur (standing in)

Dance practice will resume in the spring.  The practice day would be moving to Thursday from February through March with short sessions.

  • Scribes: Aaradyn Ghyoot (standing in)

The next meeting of the scribes will be on December 20th from 1:00 to 5:00pm at the Hatch in Watertown.  The results of the poll will be posted soon.

We are entertaining a schedule change for meetings to accommodate more people or moving to the Framingham fight practice space.

  • Waytes/Quire: Matilda

There will be a joint practice for the Waytes and the Quire on December 15th at 7:30pm at Vis & Mara’s house.

  • Low Company: Justin du Coeur

The next meeting of the Low Company will be this Friday, December 11th starting at 7:00pm at Chad & Amanda’s house.  Dinner will be at 6:00pm, please RSVP to Amanda.

  • Canton of the Towers: Chelsey of Gloucester

The next Project Day will be on December 13th in Carlisle from 3:00 to 5:00pm.  There will be a medieval music “petting zoo” and a discussion on holiday celebrations for your persona.

The Fiber Enthusiasts will meet this Thursday, December 10th at the Peabody Library off of Route 1.  The Enthusiasts will meet on the second Thursday of each month.

At St. Elygius in the Barony of Dragonship Haven, 5 of our people won the Novice A, Experienced, Fencing, Klug, and Mask of Alexander categories, with prizes for all the winners!

  • Tailors & Seamstresses: Ailis Mghean Mairgen

I am still looking for a new guild head.  Please contact Ailis if you are interested.

3. Baronial Matters

  • Census: Aurelia Rufinia

I need to conduct a census for all those who consider themselves to be Carolingian in order to report correct numbers to the Kingdom.  These items include how many unpaid members are in the Barony, where our population lies, and how many in the household.  The census is available at No Longer Available and I will post a link to this census tonight or tomorrow morning on the lists and other appropriate venues.  Please respond so we can have an accurate count of our Barony.

  • Officer Turnover Procedure: Justin du Coeur

I am currently working on an ongoing list of officer positions that are up for or will be turning over in the future, along with an e-mail address to send requests to if one is interested in turning over the position.  This list is currently online at https://www.querki.net/u/jducoeur/carolingian-officer-schedule/ please e-mail Justin to obtain access to it.  Eadgyth suggested the procedure should allow some way for others to comment on how the person is doing at their job.  Thory suggested each position should have a brief job description.

4. Events/Proposals

  • Service University: Isabelle da Costa

The event will be on February 13, 2016 at First Parish in Bedford, MA.  Announcements are going out to the appropriate listings.

  • Carolingian Company of Bowmen Shoot: Aurelia Rufinia (standing in)

We are still looking for a site, please contact either she or Erica S. with a site of interest.  The site must be able to hold a 100 yard shoot.  The previous Baronial championships site in Bedford is a choice being considered but will require port-a-potty rentals.

  • Roundtable for officer turnover: Eadgyth

This roundtable discussion will be on January 20th in Brighton at Eadgyth’s house.  This is in preparation for a panel at Service University.

5. Announcements

  • Eowyn: Buttery New Years will be happening around dark through midnight on New Years Eve at Shirley’s. Accommodations are available but will likely be the couch or the floor.  Dinner will be a potluck, please do not bring bad beer or hard alcohol.  Extra points for bringing main dishes.  Games, musical instruments, and friends are welcome!
  • Gundormr: The Houghton Library at Harvard University is having an exhibit on Saints in Manuscripts. The exhibit is running through January or February in the upstairs exhibit area.
